Living Life Upside Down

So, I’ve been somewhat obsessed or okay perhaps interested is a better word, in doing inversions this year. Be it a handstand or a headstand, I have been fairly determined to achieve a state of balance while in an upside down position.

I am also quite convinced that doing more of these will help to give me abs. Haha crazy I know, but it just seems to me that holding your body in an inverted position is not an easy thing to do. After holding 3 sets of 1 minute handstands against the wall, I am actually sweating. Go try it and tell me that you think it is easy! Unless you’re a yoga teacher then uh, no need for that.

Okay anyway so that’s besides the point. The point is, being able to hold a handstand makes me feel strong, and being able to hold a headstand makes me feel strong too but in a more controlled way. And I love the feeling.

I can’t do a proper, beautiful handstand without the wall yet, but I am currently working on it by doing the Cody app’s Journey to Handstand 30 day video tutorial – and it’s been great so far. (P.S. It is currently on sale!)

The instructors, Kino MacGregor and Kerri Verna, are both very friendly and encouraging, and their easy guidance and conversation with one another makes it a breeze to follow them through video.

I’ve not really been one to learn things from videos (I prefer real life classes and instruction), but the perk of doing a video tutorial is that you can do it at your own schedule. That’s what I really like about this. It is supposed to be a 30 day journey, but you can repeat, skip or even double days as it suits you and slowly build up the correct technique, posture and strength to do a proper handstand. I’ve only done the first 5 days of this, but I already love it.

So far, I’ve done some shoulder and wrist warm up, strengthening, flexibility and endurance exercises, overall body posture work, and I feel like it is slowly helping me to be more comfortable and stable in holding a handstand (albeit against a wall still).

I shall continue the rest of the 25 days and then update again on the results… stay tuned! 🙂
