The Lawn, Biopolis

So I just moved to a new office at The Metropolis in late January, and a friend recommended a nearby salad place to try for lunch. And oh boy, after trying it, I went back another two times that week!

The concept is not new – a mix and match sort of thing, where you choose what kind of salad ingredients, dressing and toppings you want. SaladStop! does something similar too.

What is special about The Lawn, I’d say, is the presence of grilled meats and seafood as an option, and the nice relaxing environment that coaxes you to have your meal there (instead of at your desk).

It’s pretty self service here – you fill up order forms with the items you want, bring it to the counter, pay and then given a buzzer to monitor for sounds, which indicate that your order is ready.

A basic salad with five items and a regular dressing is S$7.90, and an olive rice with one grilled item and a side salad costs the same. After adding in a grilled item or a soup shot, a meal costs around S$9.90 to S$11.90. Plain water is provided for people to help themselves to.

The food is pretty darn good. I’ve tried two of the grilled chicken types (maple infused and cajun), the butter seared dory with a parsley rub and the char-grilled garlic prawns, with assorted fresh ingredients like broccoli, alfafa, beetroot, tofu, carrots, egg, tomatoes, couscous etc, with various dressing options. They also have fruit options like apples and pineapples, but I’ve not tried these.

They were all rather delicious, and the portions were quite generous too. The butter seared dory with a parsley rub (S$7.90 + S$3) was huge and took some time to finish. After each of these meals I managed to stay pretty full for the rest of the afternoon.

At The Lawn, they also have an option of adding a soup shot to your meal for just S$1 (or S$3 with a bun and drink I think). These were alright but slightly salty. Nice as a side but definitely not the star of the place.

For the dressings, I liked the Apple Cider Vinaigrette, which was tangy and sour, and Red Island (sun-dried tomato with basil sauce), which was slightly sweet and somewhat creamy. The Citrus (orange, lemon, lime and thyme) was not bad too – rather refreshing, but I didn’t like Maple Peanut (maple syrup and peanut butter), which tasted kind of weird.

Yummy

Overall I really like this place and think that it is a great place for lunch (or even dinner), especially for people who like variety and the ability to customise your meal (like me). Service staff are pretty friendly too.

I’m very pleased that I now have such a great salad place near my office for healthy-ish meals. Definitely going back again, pretty often I’d think.

Update: I went back again yesterday and did a takeaway – it costs an additional S$1 for the packaging (kind of on the expensive side), so I guess that’s another reason to have your meal there…!
