I’d say that Rochester is one of the hip, trendy enclaves of restaurants, bars and other eateries in Singapore. And Rochester Mall is its newest addition, close to the main road.
This place seems a bit different though. A mid-sized, sleepy building at the entrance to Rochester, it houses just about 10 F&B establishments and then mostly services like laundry, hair, spa, education etc – presumably for nearby residents. There’s also a gourmet food retailer there called Rochester Market, which I’d like to check out sometime.

But let’s skip to what this post really is about, a review of Kaz Japanese Fusion Sushi. Located at a corner of the second floor, this is a fairly spacious yet not crowded Japanese place that serves pretty good food at decent prices. Though, I wouldn’t be inclined to agree about the fusion part – ‘creative’ would’ve probably been a bit more suitable.
Anyway, fusion or not, I think they did a good job with the food. Between two people, we had four fairly substantial, quality dishes for about $45 each – which given the quality of the food, I find is really quite reasonable.

We started with the Rainbow Donburi (around $22 I think), which was a beautiful mixed sashimi rice bowl with salmon, shrimp, scallop, octopus, tamago and other types of fish.
The sashimi was fresh and of just the right thickness for them to have a juicy, sweet crunch. The portion was quite generous too.

Next up was a seasonal special, the Kaki Fry ($15.80 or $16.80 for 3, $21.80 for 5). The oysters were moist and meaty, and crispy outside without being covered with too much batter. This came with some fresh salad and a delicious white creamy sauce.

And a dish I really loved was the Rainbow Roll ($18.80), a happy orange, pink, beige and green sight (made up of avocado and salmon, tuna and scallop sashimi slices draped over sushi rolls stuffed with yummy prawn tempura and tobiko, which were absolutely delightful.

The savoury sushi roll with the fresh, sweet sashimi and creamy avocado was a rather nice combination indeed.
We also had Teriyaki Chicken (around $15.80 or $16.80 I think), which was nice but not particularly fantastic, a decent rendition.

I wouldn’t really say the food blew me away, but it was enjoyable and rather importantly, fresh. Overall a pleasant experience eating at this nice, quiet restaurant, which was conducive for conversation and relaxation.
But if what you’re looking for is copious amounts of sashimi at great value, opt for one of the Japanese buffet places instead (which I will write about soon too because I love these).

I’d say this place is worth a visit if you’re in the area and looking for this sort of environment and food. And I hear the lunch sets are delicious and good value, so perhaps I will try one of these next time!
