Smoke Shack, Raffles Place

Smoke Shack is a place I used to frequent when I worked in the Shenton Way/Raffles Place area about 3 years back, but still think of fondly from time to time. As I was browsing old photos, I came across a picture of The Montevideo (Chivitos) sandwich that was my favourite at that time – and knew that I just had to share about it here.

I have three words for this place – ridiculously delicious sandwiches.

The Montevideo (Chivitos) sandwich ($9.30 back in 2010, now $11.90) well and truly blew my mind the first time I had it. A nice hefty sandwich packed with warm steak, cheese, bacon, red peppers, lettuce and more encased within a warm herb foccacia bun, it was a magical burst of flavours.

Chivitos is a sandwich-style national dish of Uruguay (its capital is Montevideo) and I’m guessing that this was the inspiration for this sandwich at Smoke Shack. This version however seems to have taken out the fried egg and replaced it with a thicker or more slice(s) of beef, which I liked as it made it chunkier and the overall taste cleaner (well, a delightful medley compared to a haphazard mix).

There are a number of other sandwiches offered by Smoke Shack as well – Smoked Salmon, Roast Beef and if I remember correctly some turkey, duck and chicken options. The little establishment prides itself on smoking meats in-house, so I’d say go for these – simply because they are done so well.

I honestly can’t remember exactly how the bread was or even much about the service (seemed quite friendly back when I used to patronize them), but the juicy, meaty Chivitos and other well put together sandwiches have left a deep impression in my mind.

Smoke Shack has since moved from its original location at Market Street – firstly to Republic Plaza, then over to Far East Square (diagonally opposite Mr Teh Tarik) where it currently is. I hear there are now breakfast offerings, and also possibly an outlet or small branch at Toby’s Estate.

I’m not sure if its still the same or as good as before, but I’m hoping to pay it a visit soon. Almost salivating now at the thought of the epic Montevideo sandwich!
